OBIEE to Tableau: A Case Study in Action

Educational institutions all over the world are inherently built upon the body of student information they historically and continually acquire every academic year. But without properly organized data, any information-based system hierarchy loses structure. And if the processing side is at the fate of manual handling, errors are probable, and modular structures are vulnerable to collapse; meaning overall security risks are high. So when a leading private research university based in the San Francisco Bay area came to us in need of comprehensive data management, BI Connector’s enhanced Tableau system served as a feasible solution to not only address growing security concerns, but to exceed intelligence expectations. They needed a product that could sustain integral processes like enrollment figures and graduation rates using OBIEE data; whilst also supervising, transforming, and governing precious data to Tableau.

The Challenge

This university was already utilizing OBIEE as the central repository for all student data, but it simply existed as stale information without real potential to transform into penetrative insight. Administration struggled with ad hoc analysis when merging data with other sources: auditing was slow and therefore arbitrary, and export/import ETL processes were highly error-prone and laborious, often leading to inconsistent results.

OBIEE With a Purpose

Tableau was able to slice and dice enrollment figures, retention and graduation rates, along with other key metrics by connecting and visualizing real-time OBIEE data directly; incorporating added insights with improved graph readings and charts. At the same time, reporting and exporting processes became more streamlined, and Tableau’s indispensable dashboards and storyboards meant that student data could convert into intelligence faster. Since OBIEE warehousing was already in effect, BI Connector’s automated processes helped to implement advanced data security using whilst reducing data risks,  as well as helping to minimize reporting and analysis errors.

Workflow Revolution

Fundamentally, as a result of switching to BI Connector, this university was able to perform ad hoc analysis instantaneously instead of undergoing manual processing which usually took weeks. Tableau’s automated processes made OBIEE data transfer much safer and no longer vulnerable to human error, as well as allowing the company to gain self-service business intelligence capabilities. Significant savings were met with regards to IT backlogs and time, since the application synthesis did not require professional supervision; just a simple, straightforward transfer of OBIEE to Tableau using a sturdy data platform.
